This will be a brand new team at Whitnall with an experienced Manager and coaching staff. There will be additional opportunites for these girls to be mentored by our older select level players.
In 2016 they will play four local tournaments, the State ASA tournament in Wausau, and local MMFL league play.
Select vs. Elite?
Our Select program fields highly competitive teams that focus on regional tournaments and league play. They also include one long distance travel event, typically the ASA tournament held in Wausau, WI. They practice nine months out of the year with the typical tournament season starting in May ending in July. Players are expected to commit 100% to the team starting with outdoor practices in April.
Our Elite teams are comprised of kids whose primary focus is fastpitch. They have demonstrated the ability to compete regionally by placing or winning tournaments. Looking to compete at a higher level, they have their eyes on playing against top competition and and will travel farther to do so. While playing other sports is encouraged, these teams ask for a year round commitment to make this team their top priority. As they will enter more tournaments cost per player will vary and is worked out in the fall shortly after the team is organized. The goal is to have all additional expenses covered by Team Fundraising.
Most families will pay $350 to play one year of Select Fastpitch at Whitnall. If you choose to opt out of volunteering and fundraising, the total cost would be $650. The program cost covers club membership, uniforms, team equipment, indoor practice facilities in the offseason, tournament and league entry fees. Whitnall provides its members several ways to offset the total cost of playing at the select level.
Annual League Fundraiser
Our fundraiser requires a $200 up-front commitment per player. This fundraiser helps to pay for field maintenance and rejuvenation along with other capital improvement projects to maintain and upgrade Schoetz park. These home fields are 100% the financial responsibility of Whitnall Youth Baseball and reduce your playing fees through our hosted tournaments.
As a 501(c)(3) Whitnall Youth Baseball affords each team the opportunity to fundraise for things like additional tournament entries, team equipment, clinics, and special team events.
Each family will also be required to volunteer their time to support our club. The opportunities vary and can include coaching, field maintenance, assisting with events, park maintenance, and service to the board of directors. In addition each family will be assigned a time to work at our concession stand during our hosted tournaments. The total commitment per family is typically 12 hours of work over the course of a calendar year.
A post dated check (June 1, 2016) for $100 will be required as part of your overall registration. This check will be returned to your family when you have fulfilled you volunteer commitment.
Open tryouts are held annually in July for our Select teams to fill available roster positions. Individual tryouts held during a current years team practice can also be scheduled at a Managers discretion. You can request one here [link to waiver form and tryout registration]
Players will be evaluated on hitting, throwing, fielding, and base running. Pitchers and catchers will additionally be evaluated on their specialized skill set. Team Managers use these scores in conjunction with their coaching staffs' observation of players to form their team.
Offers to play are made shortly after tryouts are held, and may be delayed until after the team's current year season has been completed. Typically more offers are made than spots are available. We encourage you to address any concerns that you have about the team or our program in advance.
With your offer you will receive a copy of the teams 2016 handbook and a copy of the 2016 Whitnall Tournament Team Policy document. Please make sure that you read through these documents in their entirety. Once an offer is accepted, Whitnall Youth Baseball cash the deposit towards your your 2016 Program Fees. This payment is non-refundable.
The Falcons compete in tournaments that are extremely competitive and therefore guaranteed or equal playing time cannot be expected by any player on a Select team.
Tournaments are won by playing a series of two to five games each day over the course of a weekend. Please do not assume that because a girl is sitting she is done for the game, day or weekend. We do plan ahead to win.
At the U10 and U12 level most tournaments require a continuous batting order during pool play and some bracket play. In those cases, all girls on the team will be playing offense for the game. Defense will be chosen based on the skill of our opponent and the demonstrated proficiency of the player at that position.
Our U14 and U16 teams typically enter tournaments that allow for a 9 player lineup at both bracket and pool play. Rosters, batting orders, and substitutions will be made with the goal of winning in mind.
